Freshers Fair: A Few Tips from the Activities Officer
Freshers’ Fair is a big part of Welcome Week, and for lots of people it’s the first time you really see how much is going on at Lancaster. This year it takes place in the Great Hall on North Campus, running over two days (more info here):
Wednesday 1 October 2025, 12–4pm – Active (Sports and Active Societies)
Thursday 2 October 2025, 12–4pm – Discover (Societies, Forums and more!)
It can feel busy and a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s also a great way to find things you might want to be part of. Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of it:

You don’t need to sign up for everything straight away. Wander around, stop at the stalls that interest you, and give yourself space to just look.
Taking Your Time

The students running the stalls are really keen to chat. Ask them what their society is like, when they meet, or what kind of socials they do – it’s the easiest way to see if it’s for you.
Talking to People

Most societies and sports teams run free taster sessions in the first couple of weeks. Everyone who turns up is new and probably a little nervous too – I definitely was. It helped to remember that we were all in the same boat, just trying things out and seeing what stuck. You don’t have to commit to anything, but giving something a go can be the best way to meet people and figure out what you enjoy.
Don’t Be Afraid of Tasters

Join group chats! Following, the social media of the groups you’re interested in doesn’t cost anything, and you can always decide later whether you want to commit.
Sign Up, Then Decide

Don’t feel pressured to join something just because everyone else is. Pick what genuinely interests you – that’s how you’ll meet people you click with and form communities.
Freshers’ Fair is just a starting point, and there’s no “right” way to do it. Societies and sports teams will also be running plenty of welcome events throughout the week, so keep an eye out for those too.
