Post-Grad FAQ

Questions, questions, questions.

As a post-graduate student, you’ll already be familiar with how university works. This isn’t your first time here (it could even be your third or fourth!)

But despite this, there are still some differences at post-grad study levels, and there may even be questions you have. So, let’s answer them!

Do I have a College?

All post-grad students (from Masters to PhD level) are members of the Graduate College. They offer you support, community, and advice throughout your degree. They may also host events to meet fellow post-graduate students!

You can check out the Graduate College here.

Short answer: yes!

All students are automatically members of LUSU when you join the university. This means you have access to all of the things we offer to students. From our Advice Service, to events.

Am I still a member of LUSU?

So, does that mean I can still come to the Freshers Fairs?

Of course!

The Freshers Fairs aren’t just for new undergraduate students. Post-grad students are invited too!

They’re a great opportunity to meet different societies and clubs at LUSU, as well as local Lancaster business, and even some departments at the university.

Speaking of societies, can I join them?

Yes – and many post-grads do.

At LUSU, we have over 140 affiliated clubs and societies. Which means that if they’re a part of LUSU, and you’re a part of LUSU, you get to join them. Many post-grads find new connections through clubs, and they’re a great way to get a break from studying.

It sucks, but sometimes things go wrong during your studies. As a post-graduate student, you might already be well established within your uni life. But that doesn’t mean you can’t come to us for help when you need it.

Our Advice Service can provide support in a number of ways: from academic, wellbeing, housing, hate crime, and more.

What do I do if I need help?

Are there any work opportunities available to me?

A lot of post-grads take up part-time work during studies. It’s beneficial in many ways, including providing helpful experience in your field, and offering a little more financial support.

The University also has its own employment portal, the Employment and Recruitment Service (ERS). It serves as a great way to find work opportunities for post-grad students, typically with flexible working hours. ERS also works with external companies to provide work and internships, which can be helpful for networking and getting experience in certain fields.

I still have questions!

Don’t worry – we’re always here for you.

If you have questions for us, just get in touch! Send us a DM on Instagram and we’ll see what we can do to help.

Good luck in your studies!
