Student Leadership at LUSU

Megaphone

Learn more about the different student leaders that represent you, and how you can become one too!

LUSU is here to represent students – it’s kind of what a students’ union is for.

Whether it’s academically, socially, or in wider society, we care about what you care about. And the best people to represent what students want? Students!

Student leaders are the core of LUSU, with many different kinds that do a lot of different things to support your experience. And if student leadership is something you’re interested in, you can always get involved too.

Full-Time Officers (FTOs)

Full-Time Officers (FTOs) are the top of the pop at LUSU.

Voted in annually by students during our major election period, they work full-time throughout their time in office to make change that matters. Because they’re voted in democratically by students, it means that they represent the opinions, passions, and ideas that matter to you.

We send out a notice of elections before election period, giving students the time to decide and prepare for nominations. You can learn more about FTOs here.

Liberation Groups

Advocating for the needs and interests of marginalised groups within our community is important to us. And our Liberation Groups are key to that work.

Each group acts as a supportive, representative community for the students within them. Our Liberation Groups consist of:

  • Accessibility Community

  • BAME Committee

  • International Students’ Forum

  • LGBTQ+ Community

  • Womens+ Network

You can learn more about each of them here.

Academic Representatives

But we all just call them Academic Reps – it sounds cool.

Obviously, your education is a key part of the uni experience. And your reps are key to making academic change possible.

Each department at the uni has academic reps who do a lot of work to make sure you’re getting the most out of your degree. You can learn more about them here!

JCR Executives

Ah, the College experience.

JCR, or Junior Common Room, is your college community while at uni. And each JCR has a JCR Exec. These are students from your college that you vote in who offer help, advice, and welfare support. Plus, they’ll usually host a ton of events throughout the year to make sure you’re getting the most out of your college community.

JCR Execs are voted for internally within your college, so make sure to keep an eye out for when those happen!

You can learn more about JCRs here.

Union Assembly

All of those guys that we mentioned above? Put them all together + seven Society Representatives + Seven Sport Representatives, and what do you get?

Union Assembly!

Union Assembly is the highest democratic body in the union. They meet twice every term and decide and vote on future policies and actions that matter to students.

Student Trustees

Students’ Unions like LUSU are all charity organisations. We’re not-for-profit, and everything goes back into supporting our work for you.

And like all charities, we need a Trustee Board.

This board is made up of a bunch of trustees: external ones, your FTOs, and then some students too. They attend board meetings and sub-meetings, providing their skills and experience to improve the Union. Student Trustees are usually voted for during our Summer Elections, so keep an eye out for when we announce those!

There are always opportunities to get involved in student leadership at LUSU. In fact, we encourage it!

Keep an eye on our website and social media to see when and how we’re electing!
